High on the Group’s agenda for healthcare have been polio
Eradication & Management and Eye Care. When the Global
polio Eradication goal was set in 1988 by WHO, India
reported 24,257 cases of polio. This number fell to
4,237 in 2004. While the number of cases registered may
have declined, management and rehabilitation of polio
patients is still a far cry from ideal. The Group has in
the past few years, organized several free polio camps.
The places chosen for such activities were Ratura
(Uttaranchal), Dousa (Rajasthan), Dehradun (Uttaranchal)
and Mehrauli (Delhi). At these camps, free surgical
operations were carried out and free wheelchairs and
crutches were given to the needy patients. While most of
the operations were carried out at the venues,
complicated cases were referred to speciality polio
institute.
Similarly, the Group has organized several free eye
camps at various places in the past few years. At these
camps, diagnosis of the latent eye problems and
operations, wherever necessary were carried out. An
eminent team of ophthalmologists, including Dr. Hari
Mohan, eye-surgeon to the ex-president of India,
conducted the eye operations. Post-surgery arrangements
were made for the patients at the venue, like
tent-hospitals, so that they could be under the direct
supervision of experts. In addition to that, the Group
also runs a 10 bed hospital in Rudraprayag, Uttaranchal.
The group has been actively doing it’s bit in the area
of care for disabled by getting associated with Rotary
Club organized health camps as chief sponsor from past
few years. In these camps, artificial limbs are donated
to needy people.
